Contemporary Feminism: A Conversation with Sheila Pepe and Peggy Jones
Join Bemis exhibiting artist Sheila Pepe and Peggy Jones for a lively conversation covering feminism and gender identity in contemporary culture. 2–5 PM – Exhibition Closing Reception 2:30–4 PM – Conversation with Sheila Pepe and Peggy Jones Sheila Pepe is best known for her large-scale, ephemeral installations and sculptures made from domestic and industrial materials. Since the mid 1990s Pepe has used feminist and craft traditions to investigate received notions concerning the production of canonical artwork as well as the artist’s relationship to museum display and the art institution itself. She is a prominent participant in lesbian interdisciplinary work, and explores topics of class and feminism. Peggy Jones is an Associate Professor and past Interim Chairperson of the Black Studies Department and Associate Director, Women's and Gender Studies at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, and a member of the Nebraska Humanities Council Speakers Bureau. Her research interests include intersections between language and identity, White privilege, and media (mis)representations of race and gender. Jones holds an MFA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
