Mission: “To strengthen individuals and families in our community through education, counseling and support services.”

Did you know that Heartland Family Service is Omaha's very first home-town charitable agency.

In 1875, leaders of eight local churches decided to pool their resources in order to create a more efficient response to the needs of the many children and families who came to their doors pleading for help. The historical record tells us the first activity of our then-named Christian Workers Association was a Thanksgiving dinner attended by more than 300 “. . . newsboys, bootblacks and other children of the more neglected class.” For many decades our agency was the primary provider of social services in Omaha.

Today Heartland Family Service continues to help the most vulnerable individuals, children and families of our community. Our focus on professionalism leads us to continually search for effective methods and measure the most appropriate outcomes to improve our programs. With a rich history of service and 135 years of proven success, we have earned a reputation as a leader in the human services field — identifying societal trends, anticipating client needs and creating solutions for the most urgent human challenges to our community.

We are driven by the success of the people who ask for our help: women and children from abusive homes, youth who can be redirected from a life of crime, families who face hardship and homelessness, individuals who struggle with chronic mental illness and seniors who find healthy lunches and friendly companionship at our senior center. We are challenged by the realization that the need is far greater than the resources, yet encouraged by the compassion and generosity of those who are willing to help as volunteers and donors.

We are grateful that Heartland Family Service was founded in this community
