Listening to Your One True Voice

Do you tell the world who you are, or does the world tell you? We are born into this world carrying a Light called Soul, that holds our mission and our purpose in this lifetime. This is our one true voice.

This is the voice that holds our deepest wisdom and brings forward Divine guidance. The one that allows us to speak the Truth of who we are in the world, and whispers which choice to make each step of the way for our Highest Good.

This is the voice that tells us:

  • When it’s time to let go of people and situations that no longer serve our highest good
  • That it’s safe to open our hearts once again
  • Our destiny and how to find our way “home”

This guidance can be very subtle at times. It comes in the form of a feeling, a hunch, a knowing. We hear it in the form of an inner voice that says “yes” or “no” to choices we have. It comes in the form of joy or enthusiasm as we align with that which is of Spirit. It also comes in the form of tears when the truth of the moment touches our heart.

So, if we have this Divine guidance system, why do we often make choices that cause such misery?

We often override the messages we receive from this part of us by listening instead to the voice of our fears, the voice of addictions, or the voice of other people’s opinions and expectations. We learn to give ourselves away out of the need for approval from others or fear of making a mistake.

We have all heard messages growing up about our worth and we formed beliefs about our safety and security. We learned what we needed to do in order to be accepted by our families and society. Often that means going against our instincts, not trusting our perceptions, and instead doing what others want in order to be accepted or safe.

We abandon ourselves and our true nature in order to keep the peace, get along, get approval. We have come to believe that our sense of safety lies outside of ourselves. So, we attempt to control people and situations in our lives under the illusion that what’s outside of us determines our safety and our worth, rather than living from the inside out. The result is living a life that’s two dimensional, having lost the connection with our deepest wisdom.

Instead of making decisions based on what we know is right for us on the deepest level, we often make decisions based on:

  • Not wanting to make a mistake or look foolish
  • Our addictions
  • Other’s people’s opinions or expectations
  • Avoiding pain
  • Ego, as a way of being right, better than, in control

Awareness is one of the keys to listening to your one true voice. Become aware of your motivations in a situation and what part of you is making the decision and guiding you. Is it from your heart or from your own Light or Soul? Or, is it from the part of you that more than anything wants to make others happy?

Think of the following scenarios, and notice your inner experience as you imagine yourself in each one.
A time when you made a decision:

  • based on how someone would react
  • because of an addiction
  • to avoid pain or confrontation
  • from a place of inner knowing or trust

When you start to tune in to your inner experience and are honest with yourself, you will begin to notice the difference.  You will begin to see that there are many parts of us clamoring for our attention, wanting to be heard.  Each having its own agenda. But, there is only one true voice.

Find a quiet place and allow yourself to get into a meditative or contemplative state. Think of an area in your life where you feel stuck, or want to be guided on a deeper level.

Ask yourself some questions that help you move beyond the surface:

  • “What do I know to do here that I’m not doing?”
  • “What stops me?”
  • “What do I know not to do that I keep doing?”
  • “What is it that keeps me doing that?”

Look at the situation through the eyes of Soul. What do you need to do for your highest good?

When we become aware of these inner experiences and are really honest with our motivations in situations, we can begin to clear out old beliefs and fears that no longer serve us.

We start to live life consciously. Living consciously and in the moment is another key to listening to this one true voice.

To move beyond old programming and from a place of Soul takes courage, integrity, and loving.

Even though we each have our own unique destiny, we all share one purpose in this lifetime, and that is to learn to love ourselves and know ourselves as part of the Divine. That’s the journey our Soul is on. Our Soul is unconditional loving and sees the God in all people and situations. It knows that every situation has its own gift of learning. Every choice we make can help us grow. Sometimes we have to learn who we are not before we learn who we are. Our soul is there waiting for us to tune in and listen.

“You can drop everything that is not speaking truth inside of you, now, and return to the divinity that waits with infinite patience for your homecoming.”
