Blue Sushi Sake Grill
Those looking for sushi have a choice between three Blue Sushi and Saki Grills in Omaha. The original Blue is located at 144th and Maple and is most recently joined by an Old Market Blue on 12th between Howard and Harney Streets. Baby Blue, the second in the string, serves guests in the 168th and West Center area.
True to its name, encased lighting-behind panels in the bar, free standing cubes-casts a blue hue in the restaurant’s interior. The décor is modern Asian: streamlined and angular. It’s a feast for the eyes as well as the palate.
In researching the possibility of opening a sushi bar in Nebraska, owners made several trips to the west coast and Japan before deciding on a menu and atmosphere that would appeal to the Midwestern diner more attuned to cuts of beef than types of sushi rolls. The result has earned Blue the honor of being rated Omaha’s best sushi bar.
House rolls include spicy tuna, salmon and Cali rolls of crab, avocado and cucumber. Seaweed and avocado are two vegetarian options. Milder Lobster, Tidal Wave and Martini rolls keep company with such creations as Firecracker rolls, the Cherry Bomb, and the Killer Bee. The number of rolls per plate varies; price per plate starts at $4 and tops out at $16.
For those whose tastes do not run toward sushi, Blues offers a grill menu of Asian and Asian-inspired dishes. Miso soup, duck wontons, oysters in the half shell are excellent starters and range from $4 to $14. Simple green salads are given an Asian flare, as in the case of Szechswan Caesar. Large main course selections are priced from $15 to $25 and include Coconut Tempura Chicken, Sweet and Sour Glazed Salmon and Ginger Glazed Center Cut Pork Chop.
