March of Dimes Nursing Awards

The Nebraska Chapter of the March of Dimes and Children’s Hospital presented Excellence in Nursing awards to 114 Nebraska nurses for their dedication to the nursing profession and quality patient outcomes.
Nurses were nominated by individuals who wished to recognize a nurse for their outstanding contributions. Twenty-seven of these nurses were selected for special recognition for their exemplary service, including the Rising Star and Distinguished Nurse awards.
Nurses receiving awards by institution were Alegent Health nurses Beth Kimpson, and Diane Austin. Jackie Liess and Dawn Tassemeyer from Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney and Sara Seemann from BryanLGH were honored. Jessica Koehlmoos, Annette M. Schnell and Amy Ellen Jorgensen from Children’s Hospital received special recognition. Annette is also the pediatric nurse award winner sponsored by Boystown National Research Hospital. Linda Sather and Susan Beidler from the University of Nebraska Medical Center, College of Nursing were also selected for special recognition. Methodist Hospital nurses included Jerry Patry, Patty Janousek, Kari Kersch, Sue Rohlfs, and Nina Mohr. The Nebraska Medical Center nurses included Patsy Wallace and Michelle Bomer. St. Elizabeth Regional Medical Center nurses receiving special recognition were Sue Schuelke, Penny LeDuc, Becky Walkowiak and Nancy Exstrom.
Kathy Karsting with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Public Health and Cathy Clark Sybrant, Rock County Hospital received special recognition. Sue Trigg, Education Services Unit#3-Brook Valley School and Betty Cernesh with the Visiting Nurses Association were also honored.
The Rising Star Award was given to Christine Carley of Children’s Hospital and Medical Center. Nurses receiving the Rising Star Award have practiced nursing in Nebraska for 1-5 years; demonstrate excellence in nursing and leadership skills, exemplify an extraordinary level of care and compassion, promote a positive image of nursing, and participate in community service.
The Distinguished Nurse Award was presented to Kathy J. Morris PhD, UNMC College of Nursing. This prestigious award is given to an individual who has practiced nursing 20 and represents the epitome of excellence in nursing.
In addition to the 27 nurses who received special recognition 6 graduating nursing students, who have attended a baccalaureate nursing program in Nebraska, were honored for their academic excellence, inclusion of families in patient care, provision of extraordinary care and compassion, contribution to the positive image of the student nurse, and participation in community service.
Jackie Tewes , University of Nebraska Medical Center, College of Nursing, in Omaha; Corey Smidt, University of Nebraska Medical Center, College of Nursing, in Kearney, Mary Pomerenke, Creighton University School of Nursing, in Omaha, Andrea Bakenhus, Clarkson College, in Omaha, and Susan Leach and Maria Sandoval, Nebraska Methodist College, Department of Nursing, in Omaha, received Student Nurse Excellence Awards.
