MONTHLY GUIDE: A what's happening short-list for August

 

Featured Event: Nature Unleashed: Inside Natural Disasters at the Durham Museum



If you have an extra hour or so: Consider taking a guided tour along South 24th Street between L and O streets. The tour is about 6 blocks and is filled with history, culture, and architecture. This event is every Thursday at 4:30pm and Saturday at 11:00am and costs $10 per person.

If you have 15 minutes: Walk around the 3rd annual Benson Farmers Market. From May 1st to September 25th, but fresh produce, flowers, meats, crafts, and baked goods at the market located on Military Avenue at Maple between 61st and 62nd Streets. The market is free and is open every Saturday, rain or shine, from 8:00am until noon.

If you have two hours or more: Visit Nature Unleashed: Inside Natural Disasters at the Durham Museum. The exhibit lets you experience all different types of weather from underwater earthquakes to tornados. While you are there, look at the We Lived It: Nebraska Storm Stories exhibit about the 1948/1949 blizzard, the 1952 flood, and the 1975 tornado in Omaha. It is open every day except Monday until September 12th (We Lived It: Nebraska Storm Stories ends August 29th).

If you have two hours and small children: Visit Adventures with Clifford The Big Red Dog at Omaha Children’s Museum. The event reoccurs daily until September 10th.

If you have an hour or more: Stop at the Joslyn Art Museum and look at Landscapes from the Age of Impressionism. The exhibit contains 40 paintings from the Brooklyn Museum from the 19th and 20th centuries. The Joslyn is open every day except Monday.

If you have an hour or more: Travel back in time at the Durham Museum to view Lasting Light: 125 Years of Grand Canyon Photography. The event reoccurs daily until September 12th and shows a series of 60 photographs from the 1800’s to today.

If you have three or more hours: Take a trip with the Durham Museum! Through the 10th of September, tour the streets of Omaha and learn history dating back to the late 1800’s. Tour times and dates vary.

If you have two and a half hours: Go and see a movie! Film Streams is featuring many classics including "The Adventures of Robin Hood" (1938), "The Triplets of Belleville" (2003), "ET: The Extra-Terrestrial" (1982), "Whale Rider" (2002), "The Thief of Baghdad" (1940) and "Back to the Future" (1985).

If you have an hour of more: Stop at the Joslyn Art Museum and look at Space, Silence, Spirit: Maynard Dixon. The exhibit contains over 60 paintings and illustrations representing Dixon’s carreer. The Joslyn is open every day except Monday.

If you have an hour or more: Star Wars fans need to visit the Strategic Air and Space Museum in Ashland to view Anakin Skywalker’s podracer. The 46-foot podracer will be on show until the 2nd of January.

If you have four or more hours: Go see an Omaha Royals game! This week, Omaha Royals play Portland. After the game Friday (8/6), there will be fireworks and after Saterday’s game (8/7), there will be a Faith and Family Night concert followed by fireworks. On Tuesday nights, if you buy one ticket, you can use a Kraft Singles cheese rapper to get an additional ticket free!

If you have two hours: Bring chairs, food, and drinks to the Tempo of Twilight Outdoor Concert Series at Lauritzen Gardens. Concerts will be held August 17th, August 31st, and September 14th. The gift shop and the café will be open and admission is free for members!
