Omaha Arthritis Walk 2010

Join 9-year-old Kayla and others who suffer from the effects of arthritis at the annual Lets Move Together Arthritis Walk taking place on Saturday, April 24, 2010 at the Lewis & Clark Landing and Heartland of America Park.

There's still time to sign up as a team captains, form a team to walk the day of the event and fundraise. The Arthritis Foundation in Omaha is currently in need of local volunteers to serve on special event committees. For information about volunteer opportunities, please contact the Arthritis Foundation at (402)330-6130.

Kayla, who suffers from juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA), is this year's juvenile arthritis honorary chair. Kayla was diagnosed with JRA when she was just 2 1/2 years old. Her right knee and left wrist began to swell and the pain was so unbearable that she was unable to walk or even eat with her dominant hand. Thanks to research and the right medication, today she's able to enjoy many of the same things that other kids her age enjoy including swimming, music, dancing, playing with friends and signing. She says, "Even though I have JRA, it doesn't mean I can't be normal. I tell my friends that kids have JRA too, we can still have a happy life."

Her doctor, Dr. Adam Reinhardt, is a pediatric rheumatologist at Children's Hospital and Medical Center and this year's medical honorary chair.  He is proud of the strides Kayla has made with managing her disease and the work that Omaha has done to raise funds to find a cure for this disease. In Nebraska, arthritis affects 370,000 adults and an additional 1,500 children. Nationally, that number swells to an estimated 46 million men and women who live with this debilitating disease everyday.

Lets Move Together is designed to inspire people to move every day to prevent or treat arthritis. The movement encourages everyone to engage in daily physical activity for better health and to participate in their local Arthritis Walk.
Funds raised go to arthritis research, programs and services and patient advocacy efforts. For more information on volunteering or forming a team, go to www.omahawalk.kintera.org or call (800) 642-5292.
