Opening Celebration Planned for Mildred Scott Wellness Center at Uta Halee Girls Village

An opening celebration for the Mildred Scott Wellness Center will be held Friday, June 18 at 1:30 p.m. on the campus of Uta Halee Girls Village. The new center, named after Omaha philanthropist Walter Scott’s mother, will include more than 16,000 square feet of space dedicated to providing young women admitted for treatment with a holistic environment to strengthen their minds, bodies and spirits.

Speakers at the opening celebration will include Denis McCarville, Jeff Wilke and Walter Scott. Bill Ramsey will serve as Master of Ceremonies. Interviews with other project leaders and officials from the organization, as well as facility tours, are also available to the general public and members of the media.

The growing rate of childhood obesity and the significant influence of obesity on girls who struggle with mental health and substance use issues contributed to the need for the Mildred Scott Wellness Center.

The new center will include:

  • Fitness equipment
  • Space for aerobic exercise and weight training
  • Accommodations for yoga, meditation and other activities
  • A teaching kitchen to help young women learn how to make healthy choices and prepare healthy meals
  • Space for worship and self-reflection
  • A sensory space where young women can relax and reduce stress
  • Space for individual, group and family therapy sessions
  • A specialized area to make the admissions process more comfortable for youth and families
  • A nursing suite to address young women’s health issues
The Mildred Scott Wellness Center is the centerpiece of the successfully completed $7.5 million Campaign for Wellness. The campaign also provided funds to construct Ponca Pines Academy, a therapeutic boarding school for older teens struggling with mental health disorders and substance use issues, as well as a renovation of existing spaces.
