UNMC's Dr. Zheng to meet with Chinese and U.S. presidents this week

Jialin Zheng, M.D., professor of pharmacology and experimental neurosciences and director of the Asia Pacific Rim Development Program (APRDP) at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, has been invited by the Chinese government to visit with the President of China, Jiantao Hu, during the Chinese leader's visit to Washington on Wednesday and Thursday.

On Wednesday, Dr. Zheng will participate in President Barack Obama's welcoming ceremony for Hu.

On Thursday, Dr. Zheng will attend a meeting between Hu and 40 Chinese-American leaders from U.S. universities.

Through his work with the APRDP, Dr. Zheng has helped forge strong relationships between UNMC and several high-profile institutions in China, which have led to several groundbreaking collaborations and partnerships.

Some of the accomplishments include:

  • Establishing the first-ever M.D./Ph.D. program involving a Chinese and an American university – the partnership involves UNMC and the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (SJTUSM);
  • Reaching an agreement with the China Scholarship Council (CSC) making UNMC one of 14 leading universities in the United States that will receive top Chinese graduate students from the CSC;
  • Forming a joint center for research collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese equivalent of the U.S National Academy of Science; and
  • Launching a family medicine education and training program at Xi'an Jiaotong University Health Science Center.
